This Day in NASCAR History: May 14

May 14, 2016 – Erik Jones picked up his second NASCAR Xfinity Series win of the season in the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet 200 at Dover International Speedway. Jones, who stayed out while others pitted for tires before a restart with five laps left, took the win over Bubba Wallace by 1.4 seconds. Jones led 76 laps took home the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus for the victory. Alex Bowman led 33 laps and finished third in his first series start of the season.

May 14, 2011 – Carl Edwards won the NASCAR Xfinity (Nationwide) Series 5-Hour Energy 200 as a wild crash broke out when the white flag was displayed on a green-white-checkered finish. The victory was Edwards’ third of the season and the 32nd of his career.

May 14, 2010 – Aric Almirola scored his first career NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series victory in the Dover 200 at Dover International Speedway. Almirola had enough fuel in the end when many trucks ran out on the last lap, including the dominant truck of Kyle Busch. Almirola came back from a lap down after an unscheduled pit stop for a flat tire to take the win on a green-white-checkered finish.

May 14, 2005 – Kasey Kahne captured his first NASCAR Cup Series win in the Chevy American Revolution 400 at Richmond Raceway. Kahne started from the pole and led 242 laps, but had to hold off Tony Stewart to the checkered flag. He became the third driver to score his first career Cup Series win at Richmond with Stewart, ironically, the last driver to accomplish the feat in 1999. The initial win came in Kahne’s 47th career Cup Series start.

May 14, 2004 – Kyle Busch dominated the FUNAI 250 at Richmond Raceway to grab his first career NASCAR Xfinity (Busch) Series win. Busch, who led 236 of the event’s 250 laps, held off a hard charging Greg Biffle to take over the series points lead. He went on to finish second in the standings.

May 14, 1999 – Mark Martin won the Hardee’s 250 at Richmond Raceway for the second in a stretch of three straight NASCAR Xfinity (Busch) Series wins that season. Martin led 58 laps, including the final 84, on his way to his third of six wins that season. It also marked his fifth win at Richmond, which ranks third all time.
