May 4, 2019 – Christopher Bell scored another Dash 4 Cash bonus when he took the checkered flag in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Allied Steel Buildings 200 at Dover International Speedway. Bell took the lead on the last pit stop under caution and led the final 44 laps en route to his third win, and second $100,000 bonus, of the season. Cole Custer, who finished fourth, dominated up until Bell took the lead, leading 155 laps and winning the first two stages.
May 4, 2018 – Johnny Sauter won for the second consecutive season at Dover International Speedway in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series JEGS 200. Sauter held off Matt Crafton in a two-lap dash to the checkered flag in overtime to score the victory. It was Sauter’s second win of the season and 19th of his Truck Series career. Sauter led four times for 137 laps. The overtime was set-up by an accident involving Noah Gragson, who was involved in an intense battle with Sauter for the lead. Gragson had wrestled the top spot away from Sauter after a late restart with 12 laps to go. But as the duo raced side-by-side heading into Turn 3, Gragson got loose and after making contact with Sauter’s truck spun wildly before making hard contact with the outside wall.
May 4, 2014 – Denny Hamlin scored his only win of the season in the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. Hamlin was ahead of the field and declared the winner of the race when caution flew for a multi-car accident on the final lap of the race. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver had the top spot when the caution flew for a Carl Edwards-Ryan Newman crash with five laps to go. He held the lead on a restart with two laps to go and took the white flag just after another crash erupted. With a large piece of debris sitting on track at the start-finish line, NASCAR displayed caution and the race was over.
May 4, 2013 – For Regan Smith, the Aaron’s 312 was worth the wait. After rained delayed the start of the race by 3 hours, Smith put JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity (Nationwide) Series points lead for the first time after he captured the win in a wild race at Talladega Superspeedway that shook up the point standings. The race ended on a one-time only green-white-checkered finish after NASCAR determined the race would end on Lap 107 due to darkness. The race went into overtime when a caution flag flew on Lap 105 when Joey Coulter got turned by his drafting partner Justin Allgaier. Smith was seventh on the final restart and was able to get to the front on the final lap when a seven-car accident broke out coming to the checkered flag. Kasey Kahne was originally shown as the winner, but after they reviewed the tape it showed that Smith was in the lead when the seventh and final caution flag displayed, giving him his second career win in his 111th start.
May 4, 2007 – Clint Bowyer took advantage of a quick final pit stop to get past Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth en route to victory in the NASCAR Xfinity (Busch) Series Circuit City 250 at Richmond Raceway. Bowyer, who found himself in third place with less than 30 laps remaining, benefited when a late race caution came out due to a spin by Derrike Cope, forcing leaders Kenseth and Burton to pit for fuel and new tires for the final time. During that stop, Bowyer’s team was quickest, allowing the driver of the No. 2 Chevrolet to get past the two leaders. Although he restarted third because Carl Edwards and David Ragan chose to not pit, Bowyer was quickly able to get out front, leading the final 18 laps to his second victory of the season.
May 4, 2001 – Jimmy Spencer led 192 of the 250 laps on his way to winning the Hardee’s 250 at Richmond Raceway. Spencer, who took over the seat of James Finch’s No. 1 Chevrolet five races prior, earned his first series victory in over three years. He took the lead for the final time on Lap 175 and won by 1.4 seconds over Tony Raines.
May 4, 1997 – Mark Martin won the Save Mart Supermarkets 300 at Sonoma Raceway. Martin led 69 of 74 laps from the pole for his only win at the California road course. He held off Jeff Gordon to end a winless streak that dated back to October 8, 1995.
May 4, 1996 – Ron Hornaday Jr. dominated the Craftsman 200 at Portland Speedway for his first of four wins during his NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors (Craftsman) Truck Series championship season. Hornaday passed Mike Skinner on Lap 40 and went on to take the checkered flag over Mike Bliss and take the points lead.
May 4, 1991 – Jeff Burton scored his second (of 27) career NASCAR Xfinity (Busch) Series win in the Carquest 300 at South Boston Speedway. In front of his home town fans, Burton led the final 133 laps and won the race by 3.2 seconds over Joe Nemechek. The race featured 20 cautions.
May 4, 1986 – Bobby Allison recorded his only win of the season in the Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. Allison led 40 laps, including the final six and held off Dale Earnhardt for the victory. It marked Allison’s first win since 1984 and the 82nd of his career. The race featured nine cautions for 41 laps. Prior to the race a fan stole the pace car and took it on the track and was then apprehended by the police after trucks made a road block coming off Turn 4.
