This Day in NASCAR History: May 13

May 13, 2017 – Martin Truex Jr. led the most laps for the third consecutive spring race at Kansas Speedway, but this time around he was able to win and take the checkered flag in the Go Bowling 400. Truex was ahead for a race-high 104 laps to score his second win of the season and ninth of his NASCAR Cup Series career. Danica Patrick, Joey Logano and Aric Almirola were involved in a violent crash on Lap 199. Logano and Patrick made contact and both slid into the outside wall just past the second turn before Almirola slammed into Logano’s car with a fiery impact. Almirola suffered a compression fracture to his T5 Vertebra and missed seven races.

May 13, 2016 – Matt Crafton scored his first Dover International Speedway win in the Jacob Companies 200 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race. Crafton outran Daniel Suarez to notch his first victory of the season and became the fifth different winner in five races that year.

May 13, 2011 – After having a fuel pump issue that cost him a shot at a victory at Dover International Speedway in 2010, the next trip came out much better for Kyle Busch as he was able to take the checkered flag in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series Lucas Oil 200. Just like last year, Busch had the dominant truck, leading 128 of the 200 laps. But unlike last year where he ran out of fuel in the closing laps, this time Busch was able to seal the deal. Busch held off Cole Whitt, who led 28 laps after taking two tires during a caution on Lap 156, for the victory when the caution and checkered flag was displayed on the final lap for a crash between Nelson Piquet Jr. and Timothy Peters in Turn 1.

May 13, 2007 – Jeff Gordon continued Hendrick Motorsports’ dominance of the season with his seventh career NASCAR Cup victory at Darlington Raceway in the rain-delayed Dodge Avenger 500. With steam spewing from his Chevrolet from a dangerously-close overheating engine, Gordon held off Denny Hamlin to score his third win of the season and the 78th of his career.

May 13, 2006 – Greg Biffle held off a hard charging Jeff Gordon to score his first victory of the season, and 10th of his career, in the NASCAR Cup Series Dodge Charger 500 at Darlington Raceway. It was Biffle’s second straight win in the event and it helped him climb his way up to 14th in the point standings. He led seven times for 170 of the 367-lap chase on the historic 1.366-mile track. But his last pit stop on Lap 315, while running in the top five, proved to be the winning move when he ducked in a lap earlier than leaders Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Gordon and was able to take the lead when the final stops cycled around. Gordon did his best to try and rundown Biffle in the closing laps as the leaders sliced their way through slower traffic, but Biffle was able to keep his Ford in front to take the checkered flag.

May 13, 2005 – Carl Edwards got by Elliott Sadler with one lap to go on a green-white-checkered finish to win the NASCAR Busch Series FUNAI 250 at Richmond Raceway. The final lap drama came in a tangle with Sadler. The duo touched as Edwards wrestled his Roush Racing Ford to the inside of Sadler’s car on the last circuit causing Sader to get sideways as they raced out of Turn 2.

May 13, 2000 – Jack Sprague won the Quaker State 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park as he moved into the lead on the final lap and beat defending champion Greg Biffle by 0.193 seconds. Sprague thought he was about to finish second, but Biffle’s Ford slid on the track as the drivers entered the first turn of the 200th and final lap around the three-quarter mile oval. It was enough to allow Sprague to win.

Other winners on this date: 2000 – Tim Fedewa (New Hampshire); 1995 – Chad Little (New Hampshire); 1995 – Ron Hornaday Jr. (Evergreen); 1989 – Ronald Cooper (Lanier Speedway); 1984 – Sam Ard (Milwaukee); 1967 – Richard Petty (Darlington); 1966 – Darel Dieringer (Starlite Speedway); 1956 – Buck Baker (Orange Speedway)
