May 9, 2015 – Jimmie Johnson outran Kevin Harvick to score his third win of the season in the SpongeBob SquarePants 400 at Kansas Speedway. Johnson earned his 73rd career win and set a NASCAR record with a 22nd win on a 1.5-mile track (now has 28). Johnson and Harvick were followed across the finish line by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Harvick and pole sitter Joey Logano, who came back from a couple of pit road miscues. Martin Truex Jr. led a race-high 95 laps but had to pit for fuel on the final caution of the night with 12 laps to go and could not get back to the point. The race was red flagged for rain after 98 laps were run when a heavy rain storm hit the track. After a two hour and 16 minute delay the track was dried and racing resumed.
May 9, 2014 – Kyle Busch survived a caution-filled night to win the SFP 250 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway. Busch outran Matt Crafton to the checkered flag to score his second win of the year after taking the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway. Busch became the 14th different winner in the 14 Truck Series races held at Kansas. He was able to get to the lead late and, thanks to a final 35-lap green-flag stretch, stayed there to score the win.
May 9, 2009 – Mark Martin outran his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson to win his second career Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Martin, who announced that week he would return to Hendrick for another full-time season in 2010, drove his No. 5 Chevrolet to his second victory of the season. He also won the 1993 Southern 500. Martin led the final 46 laps en route to his 37th career Cup victory. Jimmie Johnson’s second-place finish was impressive after the way his weekend started. After crashing his primary car in the qualifying session, Johnson started his backup car from the rear of the field. He survived a number of incidents as well as a pit road miscue but was still able to bring his No. 48 Chevrolet home behind his teammate.
May 9, 2008 – Tony Stewart continued Joe Gibbs Racing’s tear in the NASCAR Xfinity (Nationwide) Series by capturing the sixth win for the No. 20 team when he took the checkered flag in the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 at Darlington Raceway. Stewart held off Clint Bowyer on a green-white-checkered finish to score his fourth win in his sixth attempt that season. It was also the eighth overall win for JGR combined with Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin with both the No. 18 and 20 Teams to that point in 2008. The race looked like it would belong to Matt Kenseth in the late going, who had built a comfortable lead as the laps wound down. But after pitting under green for a vibration to give up the top spot, Kenseth’s car crashed hard on the frontstretch a few laps later.
May 9, 1998 – Jack Sprague scored his first of five wins of the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors (Craftsman) Truck Series season in the NAPACARD 200 at Evergreen Speedway. Sprague led 162 of the 200 laps and won the race by 2.2 seconds over Ron Hornaday Jr.
May 9, 1992– Todd Bodine won the Pontiac Pacesetters 200 at Nazareth Speedway. Bodine got by Bobby Labonte and led the final 26 laps to score his second (of 15) career wins in the NASCAR Xfinity (Busch) Series.
May 9, 1981 – Benny Parsons won the Melling Tool 420 at Nashville Speedway. Parsons led 209 laps, including the final 84 for his third win at the track. Darrell Waltrip finished second.
