This Day in NASCAR History: May 15

May 15, 2016 – Matt Kenseth held off a furious charge from Kyle Larson to win the AAA 400 Drive for Autism at Dover International Speedway. Kenseth scored his first win of the season and his third career at the one-mile track. He led twice for 48 laps, including the final 47 on his way to Victory Lane. Larson, who had been involved in a stirring battle with Brad Keselowski for the lead earlier in the race, tried several times to get past Kenseth but to no avail. May 15, 2015 – Kasey Kahne beat rookie Erik Jones in a photo finish to win the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 Camping World Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Kahne edged Jones by .005 seconds, tied for the second-closest finish in the 21-year history of the series. It marked Kahne’s fifth career win in six career Truck Series starts. Kahne was forced to start from the rear of the field when the team changed a shock after qualifying, but was able to get to the front and battle Jones for several laps before finally edging ahead at the finish. After the race Kahne’s No. 00 JR Motorsports Chevrolet failed post-race inspection. It was found to be too low on the front sides and too high on the right rear. Days later, the team was docked 10 points.

May 15, 2011 – Matt Kenseth used late race tire strategy to help him score his second NASCAR Cup Series win of the season in the FedEx 400 Benefitting Autism Speaks at Dover International Speedway. Kenseth took only two tires to gain track position on the day’s final caution flag and was able to motor by Mark Martin for the top spot and lead the last 32 laps on his way to Victory Lane. It was Kenseth’s second career win at Dover and the 20th of his career. Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson had dominated most of the race (combined to lead 324 laps) but both opted for four tires on the final stop, a decision that cost the duo a chance to challenge for the win.

May 15, 2010 – Kyle Busch dominated the race leading 190 laps on the day to score his fourth Xfinity (Nationwide) Series victory of the season in the Helluva Good! 200 at Dover International Speedway. Busch was forced to survive a green-white-checkered finish that was set-up by a red flag that flew for a multi-car crash triggered when Denny Hamlin clipped Clint Bowyer on a late restart.

May 15, 2009 – Ron Hornaday Jr. scored his first NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series win of the year and 40th of his career in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Hornaday easily outdistanced runner-up Kyle Busch to score the victory, his first since November 2018 at Texas Motor Speedway. Busch had an eventful night which included being penalized for aggressive driving and making contact with the race leader just past the halfway point.

May 15, 2005 – Bobby Hamilton held off Jack Sprague and Shane Hmiel on a green-white-checkered finish to score his second victory of the season in the UAW/GM Ohio 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway. Hamilton took the lead on Lap 184 after polesitter Ron Hornaday was black flagged for jumping the restart. Hamilton then went on to lead the remaining 71 laps for his 10th career series victory in his 80th start.

May 15, 2004 – Dale Earnhardt  Jr. scored his 12th (of 26) career NASCAR Cup Series win in the Chevy American Revolution 400 at Richmond Raceway. Earnhardt, who opted not to pit when the ninth caution flew on Lap 344, had a great long-run car and was able to lead the final 55 laps and outrun Jimmie Johnson in the end for his second career series win at the .75-mile Richmond oval.

May 15, 1999 – Dale Jarrett got by Mark Martin on the outside coming off Turn 2 and went on to win the Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond Raceway. It marked the first of four wins during his championship-winning season and he took the points lead with the victory.
