This Day in NASCAR History: May 10

May 10, 2019 – Ross Chastain captured his first career NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series win in the Digital Ally 250 at Kansas Speedway. Chastain took the lead on Lap 165 of 167 after Stewart Friesen ran out of fuel. After leading five laps in the race, the crossed the finish line .483 seconds ahead of runner-up Ben Rhodes. It was also the first win for Niece Motorsports.

May 10, 2014 – Jeff Gordon won for the third time at Kansas Speedway when he held off a hard-charging Kevin Harvick in the 5-Hour Energy 400. Kevin Harvick had one of the strongest cars and was leading before he made his final pit stop but exited behind Gordon and couldn’t get around him the rest of the race and finishing second. The first night Cup race at Kansas was delayed about 30 minutes by rain, saw a bank of backstretch lights go out and featured two multi-car crashes. It ended with Gordon scoring his 89th career Sprint Cup victory.

May 10, 2013 – Kyle Busch drove his No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to a dominating victory in the VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway. Busch’s victory marked the seventh win in the last eight races at Darlington for JGR. For Busch, it was his fifth victory of the season and 56th in his Xfinity (Nationwide) Series career. Busch, who led 107 laps, took the lead for good with 18 laps left when he got around Logano. It wasn’t hard as Busch had fresher tires than Logano, who didn’t pit during the final caution.

May 10, 2008 – Kyle Busch overcame a penalty for a loose lug nut and several encounters with the wall to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington Raceway. Busch was penalized for a loose lug nut during an early race pit stop and was forced back to pit road. But he was able to race his way back to the front of the field and by Lap 163 had moved into 12th place. It took 107 more laps before he was able to get around Jeff Gordon for the top spot and from there, he cruised to his third Cup win of the season. Greg Biffle was in the hunt for a third Darlington win in the last four races, but mechanical failure took him out of the race on Lap 234 after leading 95 laps.

May 10, 2003 – Scott Riggs took advantage of Mike Bliss’ misfortune to win the Charter Pipeline 250 at Gateway International Raceway. Bliss’ Chevrolet ran out of fuel on the last lap while leading the race. Riggs scored his third career win in the same No. 10 Ford he raced to a second-place finish at Richmond the week prior.

May 10, 1997 – Rich Bickle made it back-to-back wins on the season when he took the checkered flag in the NAPACARD 200 at Evergreen Speedway. Bickle led 142 laps and won the race over Jack Sprague. Bickle posted a 2.5 average finish in his two starts at the .646-mile track.

May 10, 1997 – Mark Martin scored his second Talladega Superspeedway win in the Winston 500. Martin, who led 47 laps, set the race record in the event with an average speed of 188.354 mph (2:39:18) after it went caution free. Martin led the final 31 laps and held off Dale Earnhardt by .146 seconds for his second consecutive win of the season. The 188-lap race was originally scheduled for April 27 but rain forced the rescheduling.

May 10, 1997– “Magic Shoes” at “The Magic Mile.” Mike McLaughlin recorded his first win of the NASCAR Xfinity (Busch) Series season in the United States Cellular 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. McLaughlin drove around Jeff Fuller on the outside in Turn 4 to take the lead with three laps to go and then held off a hard charging Steve Park.
