This Day in NASCAR History: May 5

May 5, 2018 – Justin Allgaier held off his teammate Elliott Sadler in a thrilling finish to the OneMain Financial 200 at Dover International Speedway to claim the win and the Dash 4 Cash bonus. Allgaier scored his sixth career series win and won the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash for the fourth time in his career. It marked the seventh time in the last nine Dash 4 Cash races that a JR Motorsports driver won the $100,000 bonus. Allgaier led three times for 104 laps, including the final 68, and had only led 19 laps in his prior 14 Dover starts.

May 5, 2013 – David Ragan made a last lap move in a green-white-checkered finish to win the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. The win by the Front Row Motorsports driver capped a long and crash-filled race that was delayed by three hours and 36 minutes for rain. Ragan hooked up with teammate David Gilliland on the final two-lap overtime restart and went on to claim his second career Cup Series victory.

May 5, 2012 – With a slingshot move past Cup Series teammate Kyle Busch five laps into overtime, Joey Logano won the Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Xfinity (Nationwide) Series race at Talladega Superspeedway. Logano beat Busch to the finish line by .034 seconds to win his second race of the season and the 11th of his career. Defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. ran third and took over the points lead from Elliott Sadler. Danica Patrick finished 13th, but after the checkered flag, she exacted revenge on Sam Hornish Jr. for crowding her into the wall as they approached the finish line, knocking Hornish into the outside wall in Turn 1 after the race was over.

May 5, 2006 – After signing a contract extension with car owner Richard Childress earlier in the day, Kevin Harvick celebrated Friday night in Victory Lane. Harvick held off a late race challenge from teammate Jeff Burton to win the rain-delayed Circuit City 250 at Richmond Raceway. The win was Harvick’s third Xfinity (Busch) Series triumph of the season and extended his lead in the point standings to over 300. Harvick took the lead from Paul Menard, who was trying to become the first series regular to win that season, on Lap 203.

May 5, 2002 – Terry Cook took charge of the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers Ram Tough 200 at Gateway International Raceway with about 70 laps remaining and he never looked back. Cook earned his second career NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors (Craftsman) Truck Series victory – and first since 1998 – by beating Jason Leffler to the line by 8.7 seconds.

May 5, 2002 – Tony Stewart survived 14 caution flags and a late-race battle with Ryan Newman to the rain-delayed Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond Raceway. Stewart’s No. 20 Pontiac had plenty of battle scars from a rough-and-tumble race, but was able to go to Victory Lane for the second time that season and the 14th time of his career. Stewart made a terrific restart with 17 laps to go and pulled away to the victory. Stewart had to battle from the rear of the field after an engine change.

May 5, 2001 – Tony Stewart earned his first victory of the season by coming on strong late in the race and holding off Jeff Gordon and Rusty Wallace to win the Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond Raceway. Stewart got by Wallace, who led a race-high 276 laps, on Lap 362.

May 5, 2000 – Jeff Green outfoxed Mark Martin with 85 laps to go, then held off a challenge by Matt Kenseth to win the Hardee’s 250 for his first NASCAR Xfinity (Busch) victory of the season. Green, the series points leader at the time and eventual champion, took the lead when Martin pitted for tires and fuel with 54 laps to go, more than 30 laps after Green and most of the other challengers stopped. The gamble failed, allowing Green to score his fifth (of 16) career win. Martin led 147 of the 250 laps, and he and Steve Park were dominant until Bobby Hillin Jr.’s spin in the backstretch on the Lap 165 brought out the sixth caution. After Martin and Park bypassed pit road, the challengers ducked in.

May 5, 1996 – Rusty Wallace got by Jeff Gordon on the final restart of the race and went on to win the Save Mart Supermarkets 300 at Sonoma Raceway over Mark Martin. Wallace led 36 laps in the race, including the final six. Gordon led 12 laps prior to the final caution when he saw his lead get erased and wound up finishing sixth.
