Kurt Busch won the pole for today’s NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Busch posted a lap of 29.790 seconds, 181.269 mph to capture his 28th career pole in his 691st start.
Led by Busch, Chevrolet drivers took the top six spots.
“I’m just so proud of (crew chief) Matt McCall and all our guys and the way we have to communicate right now, and get through everything as far as those last-minute details and those fine adjustments,” Busch said. “But, wow, what a Chevrolet brigade up front.”
Busch knocked Jimmie Johnson off the top spot late in the session.
Johnson will start second followed by Chase Elliott, Matt Kenseth, Tyler Reddick and Austin Dillon.
Joey Logano was the top qualifying Ford driver in seventh and defending race winner Martin Truex Jr. was eighth and tops for Toyota.
Matt DiBenedetto qualified 33rd after hitting the Turn 4 wall on his lap. The damage will force the No. 21 Wood Brothers team to a backup car and to the rear of the field.
Aric Almirola did not complete a lap after he spun his No. 10 Ford in Turn 4 coming to the green on his attempt. Almirola will be one of four drivers to start at the rear for unapproved adjustments that includes Brad Keselowski, JJ Yeley and Timmy Hill. Keselowski was slated to start ninth.
