Season Review: Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson ended a 75-race winless drought and finished sixth in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series standings in 2019.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver accumulated eight top-five and seven top-10 finishes during the campaign that also included a pole position.

Larson made it to the Round of 8 after winning at Dover in October. The victory gave Larson an opportunity to keep his championship hopes alive.

Getty Images"To move on to the next round is special, but we’re not just satisfied with being in the Round of 8. We want to go and make it into that final round of Homestead, where it’s my best track," Larson said after his victory.

"It’s the final year for the championship race to be at Homestead, so I’ve looked at this ever since they released next year’s schedule as this is my best opportunity to win the championship. I’ve got to take advantage of that."

The Dover win got Larson back to Victory Lane for the first time since he won at Richmond in September of 2017. He led 154 laps of the Drydene 400 to earn his first appearance into the Round of 8.

"That’s as good as I’ve ever been around cutting the bottom here," Larson said. "Just a great combination here. Good to be fast in practice and then be good again in the race and get the win."

Unfortunately for Larson those dreams ended when he wasn’t able to advance to the Championship 4 after the Round of 8.

Getty ImagesLarson has another year on his contract with Ganassi. His current deal allows him to run 25 open wheel dirt track races in and around his NASCAR commitment, something he took advantage of after the season ended when he strung together four West Coast wins, including the prestigious Turkey Night Grand Prix.

He remains focused on improving his NASCAR performance next year while a member of Chip Ganassi Racing.

"I want to do the best job I can while I’m with Chip and if I continue to be with Chip," Larson said. "He took me from nobody, nobody ever heard of me or even when they started to hear about me wouldn’t give me a shot. I’m very loyal and thankful for that. I would love to be with Chip for the rest of my career if I could."
