A fueling problem on a pit stop took Kyle Busch out of contention to win Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen.
Busch was the leader when caution came out and sent teams to pit road for what should have been the final scheduled fuel stop of the day. But fuel did not flow into Busch’s tank properly and he was forced to come back to pit road two laps later giving up the lead.
“We had a fast race car and knew that from the first lap of practice but didn’t execute all day and that’s what it takes,” Busch said. “Two years in a row we had pit road failures, mishaps, bad luck, whatever you want to call it and all we can come up with is a podium.
“Last year we had a lug nut get stuck in the caliper, this year we had fueling problems. It never ceases to amaze me. Nothing surprises me anymore.”
Busch was forced to restart from the rear of the field and was able to race his way all the way back to third when the checkered flag flew trailing winner Chase Elliott and second-place finisher Martin Truex Jr.
“It was a heck of a lot harder than it should have been,” Busch said of his finish. “But that was the predicament we were put in, and we had to go work. I certainly gave (team owner) Joe (Gibbs) his money’s worth today, maybe even a couple more races.
“You know, overall just we had a fast race car. I can’t say enough about our guys, our shop, everybody at TRD engines, everything that gave us that opportunity. We just failed to capitalize, so it’s a disappointing day, no question.”
