Denny Hamlin’s Coca-Cola 600 got off to a tough start even before the green flag was displayed.
Hamlin’s Toyota dropped a ballast as the car pulled on to the track for the pace laps. He fell multiple laps down at the start so the team could fix the issue.
The NASCAR Rule Book states: “Loss or separation of added ballast from the vehicle will result in a four-race suspension of the crew chief, car chief, and head engineer.” Any post-race penalties are usually issued early in the week.
After the Coca-Cola 600, the NASCAR Cup Series will be back in action at Charlotte on Wednesday night.
Hamlin has won two of the first six races this season, the Daytona 500 and last Wednesday’s Toyota 500 at Darlington Raceway.
