Storyline – Rules package, track could cause drama in the desert: The current Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series rules package, with the 750 horsepower engine teams will run at ISM Raceway, stresses the importance of optimizing car set-ups, including tire inflation pressures. This car (high downforce, high horsepower) and ISM Raceway’s configuration (‘racy’ layout, relative lack of banking) combine to present challenges (high speeds, high loads on tires). Utilizing the right air pressures to strike the balance of grip and longevity will be key to establishing a competitive set-up for the race. Another factor in the race this week will be the application of the traction compound PJ1 in the upper groove. That will give drivers that choose to use it an option for an enhanced second lane for passing.
"This being the NASCAR Cup Series’ last short track race of the season, it is the final time we will run this high downforce/high horsepower package," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. "There’s really no other track on the circuit that is quite like Phoenix. Its unique configuration is relatively flat, but it also races more like a speedway than a traditional short track. Everything teams have to deal with this week makes it tough to balance the optimum set-up with what the car has to handle relative to speeds and loads. Included in that set-up tool box are our recommended air pressures, which teams will do well to observe in order to strike a balance in the risk vs. reward battle to gain maximum grip."
Notes – Cup and Xfinity on new left-side at Phoenix; completely new tire set-up for Trucks: Teams in all three of NASCAR’s national series will run the same tire set-up at Phoenix this week . . . for teams in the Cup and Xfinity series, they will run the same right-side tire code they ran at Phoenix in March with a new left-side code (construction update) . . . Truck Series teams will be on a new tire set-up compared to their last race at Phoenix last November . . . for the Trucks, this left-side tire features a construction update, while this right-side tire features a compound change to introduce more wear and run cooler . . . as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run liners in their tires at Phoenix.
