Alex Bowman had a block go bad that resulted in a 10-car accident and him exiting the 1000Bulbs.com 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Lap 106.
Bowman was out front by himself and tried to block a run by Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer and Brad Keselowski and the faster car of Logano made contact with him going into Turn 3. The end result sent Bowman up the track and into traffic. Bowman was one of seven playoff drivers involved that included his teammate Chase Elliott.
“I just didn’t realize how fast the 22 was coming there and I probably shouldn’t have even attempted to block that,” Bowman said. “It was a solid chunk faster than us so that’s on me. Really unfortunate for our team. I apologize to the other guys that got taken out in that. That’s not what we needed to do today.”
Bowman’s teammate Jimmie Johnson, who is not in the playoffs, and Kyle Larson, who is locked into the Round of 8, were also unable to continue after heavy damage.
“I just saw a little bit of smoke and was in the top lane hoping to get through it,” Larson said. “I saw the 88 door numbers and I clobbered him. That was a huge hit on my part.”
Bowman entered the race at Talladega 17 points ahead of the cutline and leaves Talladega 18 points behind after his 37th-place finish.
