A spin across the track by Jamie McMurray’s No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet on Lap 211 of the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway also collected NASCAR Playoffs driver Chase Elliott and led to an early exit from the race from both drivers.
McMurray’s No. 1 scraped the outside wall, potentially leading to a cut tire on Turn 4 that caused his car to skid across the track. Elliott was following close behind in his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and couldn’t avoid contact.
Both cars suffered substantial damage 56 laps from the end of the race, and Elliott’s shoulder took a hit.
“I guess (my shoulder) just got caught in the wheel, but it popped really big, and then it popped really big again (after the cars stopped). All good now. We’ll try to rebound next week.”
Elliott was the No. 8 seed of 16 drivers entering the first race of the NASCAR Playoffs in Las Vegas.
