John Hunter Nemechek held off Kyle Benjamin to win Monday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Alpha Energy Solutions 250 at Martinsville Speedway.
Nemechek led the final 31 laps on his way to a sixth-career series win. But he had to stay in front of the hard-charging Benjamin in a final seven-lap dash to the checkered flag to earn the win.
“We just had to stay out there and I didn’t know if we were going to be able to do it,” Nemechek said after scoring his first career Martinsville win.
“I can’t thank everyone enough, Dad, everyone that puts their heart and soul into this deal. There’s only four guys at our shop this year, so it’s really cool to be able come back over here to the Truck Series.”
Nemechek is the fourth different driver to win a series race in 2018.
Benjamin, Brett Moffitt, Grant Enfinger and Noah Gragson rounded out the top five.
“It was pretty close right there,” Benjamin said after becoming only the only the 11th driver to finish in the top two in his series debut. “We had a pretty good truck on long runs and unfortunately it came down to a short run. It’s Martinsville so I figured I needed to give him a run for his money coming off there on the last lap.
“We had a great day and had a fast truck.”
Myatt Snider, Timothy Peters, Harrison Burton, Austin Hill and Justin Haley completed the first 10 finishers.
Ben Rhodes won the first two stages after starting from the pole and led a race-high 134 laps. However, a bad pit stop before the final stage dropped him back in the field and he was never able to recover to finish any higher than 12th.
The race resumed Monday morning after being red flagged for rain after 23 laps during its original race date last Saturday.
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series now takes several weeks off until returning to action May 4th at Dover International Speedway.
