In 2016, Byron turned in the most successful rookie season in the 22-year history of the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series with seven victories. He appeared to be on his way to the Championship 4 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway but with nine laps to go in the penultimate race at Phoenix the engine in his Toyota expired and relegated him to a 27th-place finish. He went on to win the season finale from the pole and finished fifth in the final standings.
The following season the Charlotte, N.C. native progressed into the Xfinity Series, where he earned four wins en route to the championship.
Hendrick Motorsports signed Byron in August 2016. In 2018, he joined drivers Chase Elliott, Jimmie Johnson and Alex Bowman as a member of the four-car NASCAR Cup Series operation.
The 2018 season saw Byron claim Rookie of the Year honors after scoring four top 10s and finishing 23rd in the standings. He has now won rookie honors in four consecutive seasons after earning the award in the Xfinity Series in 2017, the Gander Truck Series in 2016 and the K&N Pro Series East (now ARCA Menards Series East) in 2015.
Byron finished the 2019 season with career numbers in the Cup Series with 13 top 10s, five top fives and five poles. He made the playoffs for the first time and finished 11th in the standings.
Prior to racing in NASCAR’s top divisions, Byron competed in the K&N Pro Series where he won the East title after scoring 11 top 10s, including four wins, in the 14 races during the 2015 campaign.
Sponsor Liberty University began its support of Byron in 2014 when he drove Late Models for JR Motorsports. Byron is a student working toward an undergraduate degree in business communications through the school’s online education program.
Byron, who scored his first career Truck Series win at Kansas in May 2016, purchased his first Legends car in fall of 2012 and began competing in the U.S. Legend Young Lions Division in 2013. He turned Pro in Legends in January 2014 and won the Charlotte Winter Heat U.S. Pro championship. He competed in 69 Legend races across the U.S. in 2013 and registered 59 top five and 64 top-10 finishes and captured the 2013 U.S. Legend Young Lions National championship.
