KNOXVILLE, Iowa - Brian Brown continued to build momentum heading into the 54th FVP Knoxville Nationals by capturing the win in Thursday's qualifying night.

It marked the second consecutive year Brown has scored the win on his qualifying night and it also marked his third win in the last week after scoring a win in last Saturday's Knoxville 360 Nationals and in Monday's Front Row Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway.

"We've had a pretty good run here the last week and a half," Brown said. "I'm hopeful just to continue to have that success."

After a red flag that was brought out on lap 19 when Kevin Swindell lost the steering on his No. 71 machine and hit the wall, Brown was able to get by Sam Hafertepe Jr. on lap 21 and go on to record his 29th Knoxville win.

"We caught Sam in traffic and he made a couple good moves and he was gone and he was going to win the race if it wasn't for that red," Brown said. “I got a good run off of Turn 4 and stuck the bottom again and that time I got a little bit further up beside him and thankfully he didn’t chop me that time."

Brown's recent victories came after he crashed going for the lead in in the 410 feature at Knoxville on July 26. His crew worked all night after the incident just so they had a head start on getting ready for Southern Iowa Sprintweek.

"This car that we are running tonight is the car we have run in the Knoxville Nationals the last two years," Brown said. "We won three in a row here and put it away thinking OK we'll save that for the Knoxville Nationals. We bring a brand new Maxim out and it's better than we had. Two weeks ago...I was going for the lead and got into it with Ian Madsen there and spun it around and stuck it into the fence and bent the car in 25 different directions and broke our Knoxville Nationals motor all in one night. That's the good thing about having Charlie Garrett engines and Maxim chassis'. We pulled another motor out that we thought was just as good."

Brown's win to go along with his fourth fastest time in time trials help give him 485 points, which ranks second.

Hafertepe Jr., who took the lead on lap 14, held on to finish second.

"We were getting through traffic really awesome, and felt like we were really gapping ourselves just hitting the bottom really good," said Hafertepe, who is fifth in points with 457. "On the restart, I just said, 'you know what, I'm just going to make these guys drive underneath me.' It was pretty hard to hit down there, and if anyone could hit it, it's Brown, and thought we were going to have enough momentum to make him stay on the outside and maybe hold him off. I chopped him one time, and thought about chopping him again, but he had such a good run coming off the bottom."

Kerry Madsen's third-place finish helped give him the point lead after the first night with 491. Paul McMahan, who was fastest in time trials, (484) and Terry McCarl (481) rank third and fourth, respectively.

Thursday night marked the opening night of the Nationals after Wednesday's program was moved to Friday due to heavy rain.

"Hats off to Knoxville Raceway...for being able to get this event in," Brown said.

Friday's original scheduled races have been moved to Saturday afternoon, prior to the regularly scheduled Saturday show.
