Pittman Wins Cheaper Than Dirt Shootout Preliminary

FORT WORTH, TX (October 10) – Daryn Pittman beat “King of the Outlaws” Steve Kinser in a fierce battle royal Friday as the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series opened the Fourth Annual Cheap Than Dirt Shootout at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.

Pittman, the series’ Manufacturers Hard Charger Award winner a year ago, overcame three slide moves by the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader while driving the royal blue #21 Hop & Sack CMC to his first Preliminary Feature victory of the season.

“This is great,” Pittman said in victory lane. “This team is awesome. I finally won one with my car owner, Donnie Woodburn, here.

“You expect nothing else from Steve. If you pass him for the lead, you’ve done something. If you can stay ahead of him, it’s something else. We had on harder tires and the car got better and better every lap. Man, it’s just great. Steve is running for a championship. He wouldn’t do anything to wreck.”

Pittman, who closed to within 14 points of Joey Saldana in their battle for third place in standings, came dangerously close to colliding with Kinser three times as they raced for the lead. The 2001 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion was just inches ahead of “The King of the Outlaws” when they crossed the finish line ending the 23rd lap. Kinser took the low line into the third corner and slid in front of Pittman in turn four to regain first place only to have Danny Lasoski stop on the back stretch.

Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Pittman in the low groove turn two, but slid high in the fourth corner as Pittman raced past. Following a 24th-lap caution for a second-corner collision involving Schatz and "B" Feature winner Paul McMahan, the leaders almost crashed in the turn three.

Pittman, who paced the 37-car qualifying session featuring 19 of the series’ top 20 drivers, started inside the fourth row. He raced into the high groove in turn four to pass Donny Schatz and Sammy Swindell within seconds of a 20th-lap restart, and immediately set his sights on “The King of the Outlaws.”

Kinser, who increased his lead over Lasoski to 112 points with the runner-up run, started the 30-lap race inside the second row. Pole-sitter Tim Shaffer, who won Preliminary Features at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track in 2000 and 2002, spun in the fourth corner while battling Beef Packers teammate Sammy Swindell for the lead late in the opening lap. Shaffer restarted at the rear of the field, allowing “The King of the Outlaws” to move into the pole position for the restart.

Kinser burst into the lead as the green flag replaced the yellow. Brian Paulus pulled a wheel-stand and stopped in turn four the next time around. Brooke Tatnell, the only Australian driver to win an O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series main event, was on the move following the caution period, passing Lasoski and Schatz to move into third place during the third and fourth laps.

“The Dude,” a two-time winner at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, drove NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle past Tatnell and Schatz during laps six and seven, the exchanged second place with Swindell twice during the next two laps.

Kinser was half a straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic during the 10th lap. While Lasoski and Swindell battled for second place, they narrowed the gap on “The King of the Outlaws” in dense traffic. Only four car-lengths separated the top three cars during the race’s middle stages.

“The Dude” collided with Kinser as he tried to take the lead early in lap 17, knocking a fuel nozzle loose on the #20. Within lap after Schatz passed him for third place, Lasoski stopped in turn four.

Pittman replaced Lasoski in the battle for the lead, passed Kinser three laps later and held him off by 1.53 seconds for the $5,000 victory.

"The people here at the track did a tremendous job with the racing surface," Pittman said. "They worked on it all night, and I think the fans got to see a good race. Everyone was a little leery about running up top, but I just got up there and it was the best place for me to run. This is a new car built by CMC and to have Bob Foster here was really cool. I'm glad to get a win for him."

Tatnell finished in third place, ahead of Shane Stewart, Swindell, Kraig Kinser, 23rd-starting Jac Haudenschild, Shaffer, 18th-starting Saldana and Aaron Berryhill.

Jason Meyers won the Second Heat Race and drove the #7 VMAC Maxim into 11th place from inside the 11th row.

Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Jason Sides was scheduled to start the Preliminary Feature outside the fourth row. He coasted into the work area as the cars lined up for the race, forcing him to start outside the 12th row. Sides drove the #7S Aramark/Ozark Maxim past 11 cars to finish in 13th place.
