Pittman Crowds Schatz In Hard Charger Standings

KILGORE, TX (October 21) – Not only is Daryn Pittman gaining on Joey Saldana in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series point standings, the 25-year-old driver from Owasso, OK, has narrowed the gap in the race for Motorsport Video’s Hard Charger award in recent weeks.

Pittman enters Friday’s Lone Star Speedway event only nine points out of third place in the series standings. He has passed 253 cars this season, 19 fewer than leader Donny Schatz.

Pittman, who received the Manufacturers’ Hard Charger Award a year ago, has driven Sher-Don Motorsports’ #21 Hop & Sack CMC past 47 cars since early September. The 2001 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion put together his best performances in successive events, racing into ninth place from inside the 11th row in the Gold Cup Race of Champions and passing 12 cars to finish 12th at Hollywood Hills Speedway. Pittman also raced to victory from inside the fourth row on opening night of the Cheaper Than Dirt Shootout at The Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.

“We’ve been really strong this past month and that has all of us excited,” Pittman said recently. “Things have been going so well lately that we have a shot at third place in the points. Earlier in the year, the guys in front of me seemed to just keep getting farther ahead and now we’re closing back in on them. We just want to finish strong and head into next year with momentum.

“We haven’t won as many races as we hoped to, but here lately we’ve been consistently strong. My crew (Joe Gaerte, Glenno Inglis and Bingo Jenkins) has been great all year. We’ve been running up front for about the past month, and I think we can still pick up a win or two to help us finish with a bang.”

Motorsport Video is sponsoring the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series Hard Charger award during its Silver Anniversary Season.

Greg Stephens, the series’ official videographer, is rewarding the driver who improves the most positions in each feature race with a videotape of that race. Motorsport Video will also reward the driver who passes the most cars during the season with a $1,000 check at the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series Awards Banquet November 2nd.

Schatz has passed 282 cars to lead the series through the first 65 events. Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Jason Sides has passed 193 cars, followed by Saldana with 186 and Tim Shaffer with 180.

Motorsport Video tapes can be purchased at the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series souvenir trailers and online at http://www.motorsportvideo.com.
