Lasoski Has One Month To Capture World Of Outlaws Title

CENTER LINE, MI (October 2) – Danny Lasoski is well aware that the month of October is vital to his World Of Outlaws team, as it means they've got 30 days to overtake Steve Kinser for the championship title.

Lasoski, who currently sits second in World of Outlaws points, led the championship charge for 45 of the first 46 series events this season. The #20 Mopar-powered team is focused on bringing the season to a close in a big way.

With five weeks left in their 2003 World of Outlaws campaign, Lasoski and company are preparing for events, several of which will be on half-mile tracks that have been kind to the team in the past.

Twelve races remain for Lasoski to regain the series points lead, and this weekend may provide the opportunity for the team to turn the tide in their favor. The World of Outlaws will visit the Port Royal (PA) Speedway tonight, then move to Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA, Friday and Saturday. The racing action for the week will conclude Sunday at Bridgeport (NJ) Speedway.

"First and foremost, we're going to need a little luck,” Lasoski said. “Our job now is that we have to win races and Steve (Kinser) has to have a little bad luck. We don't want to wish any bad luck on him at all, but that's what needs to happen if we're going to gain any points on Steve. But it's not uncommon to make up a large amount of points in a race or two. It's happened to me and it's happened to him (Kinser) also. I know he's thinking the same thing – being consistent and running in the top five. We can't even remotely think about points. We just have to go out and try to win every race."

Lasoski had this to say about how the 2003 season compares to seasons past.

“The year we won in 2001 was kind of similar to this year. We were down by 66 points and we came back to win the championship by 36 points. It can be done. You just have to have some luck on your side. This J.D. Byrider/Home Depot/Mopar team is ready for the challenge. The tracks from here on out are good ones for us. Our Mopar engine loves these big half-miles, and that's where we're going."

Lasoski had this to say about the position he'd like to be in when the series arrives in Las Vegas for the season finale.

"If I could look into a crystal ball and wave a magic wand, I would like to see us tied with Steve when we go into the finale at Vegas. That's the land of enchantment, if you will, and everything's a bet, and I'd like to see the best team come out of there with the championship. That would be fitting for this year."

Tony Stewart, owner of the #20 World of Outlaws race team, had this to say about the position his race team is in with a month left in the season.

"I'm sure Danny and the team would much rather be leading the points, but with 12 races to go they're not in a bad position by any means. They don't have to look over their shoulder to see who's coming up behind them. There's really no one there. They only have to look forward and worry about the guy ahead of them, and that's Steve [Kinser]. In all my years of racing, I always preferred being the hunter rather than the hunted. Danny's the hunter right now, and a lot can happen in 12 races."
