Jason Meyers Dominates Port Royal Main Event

PORT ROYAL, PA (October 2) – Jason Meyers showed just how much he enjoys racing at Port Royal Speedway Thursday, leading all 25 laps to win the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series “A” Feature.

Meyers started outside the front row and drove the #7 VMAC Maxim under the checkered flag with a straightaway to spare for his fourth main event victory of the series’ 25th Anniversary Season.

“I really like this place,” Meyers said. “We were talking earlier this week about where we were racing this weekend, and someone said, ‘we’re going to Port Royal,’ and I said ‘cool, I like that place, we’ve run pretty well there before.’

“It’s really cold out here, and I think it’s great that so many people came out to support sprint car racing tonight. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to run this car. For everyone who’s been wondering, Craig (Dollansky) is coming back for Kilgore, TX (October 24th), and he’s going to run the last four races. I’m going to run my own car in those races. I’m just glad to win for VMAC and Karavan Motorsports.”

Meyers, the ninth-fastest car in the 40-car field, won his seventh Dash Race of the season for the privilege of starting next to Jac Haudenschild on the front row. Meyers won a front-straightaway drag race with “The Wild Child” as the green flag fell, only to have Donny Schatz collide with First Heat Race winner Lance Dewease, Todd Hestor and Adrian Shaffer in turn two early in the opening lap.

The front-row starters raced wheel-to-wheel down the front stretch and through the first corner as the green flag replaced the yellow. Meyers surged ahead high in turn two, and entered lapped traffic with a 15-car-length advantage five laps into the race.

Mike Wagner opened the track ahead of the leaders two laps later when he spun into the fourth-corner retaining wall. Danny Lasoski and Tim Shaffer collided on the front straightaway as they battled for sixth place two laps after the race resumed, allowing fast qualifier Paul McMahan to pass Lasoski for the seventh position.

Mechanical trouble forced Jonathan Allard to stop in turn two early in the 11th lap. Meyers controlled the ensuing restart, and opened a 15-car-length advantage over Haudenschild within seven laps. “The Wild Child” surrendered second place midway through lap 20 when the engine in the #4 RacetoHawaii.com Maxim lost power.

McMahan lost seventh place the next time around when the #11H Vivarin Maxim suffered a flat right rear tire. Greg Hodnett was in fifth place when he coasted into the infield with engine problems and Schatz pitted for repairs during the caution period. Haudenschild returned to the race with four laps remaining and eventually finished 14th.

Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Jason Sides passed Ford Dealers of Iowa Knoxville Nationals hero Erin Crocker for seventh place high in the second corner as the green flag replaced the yellow. Meyers controlled the final restart and took the checkered flag as Daryn Pittman headed into turn three.

“Charlie Garrett told me before the A-main, ‘I’ll see you in victory lane in about 15 minutes,’ Meyers said. “It’s great to come here to Pennsylvania and win one. Charlie Garrett built our engine, and he builds a great piece, second to none. DJ (Lindsey) and Brian (Sundby) gave me a great racecar tonight.”

O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser finished in third place, ahead of Tim Shaffer, Lasoski, 18th-starting Kraig Kinser, 19th-starting Sides, Crocker, 20th-starting Mike Erdley and Johnny Herrera.

McMahan, who raced into 19th place during the final four laps, passed Brian Paulus for seventh place in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series point standings. Herrera moved into 11th place with his 13th top-10 finish of the season.

McMahan paced the qualifying session for the sixth time this season, circling the semi-banked, ½-mile oval in 15.843 seconds, an average speed of 113.615 M.P.H.

Joey Saldana’s #17 Eagle Raceway Eagle suffered a blown engine during his first qualifying lap, allowing him only the 39th-fastest qualifying time. The 1996 Rookie of the Year used a provisional to start the “A” Feature and raced into 13th place from the 13th row.

Len Thompson, the last driver to qualify for the main event, passed nine cars to finish 15th.
