Another World of Outlaws race, another first-time winner.

Tim Shaffer picked up win No. 1 of the season Wednesday night at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track. Shaffer, who had 11 top-five finishes before the race, cruised to the win by leading all 30 laps of the race and winning by the length of a straightaway.

“It was really our night tonight,” Shaffer said. “We’ve been running better lately, getting more Top 5s, and it’s just hard work by everyone that’s getting it done.

“This is a good time of year to be back running good. I just hope we can keep it up for another four weeks (through the Amoco Knoxville Nationals).”

Shaffer became the 13th different driver to win an Outlaws race this season.

Defending Outlaws champion Steve Kinser followed Shaffer across the finish line to take second. Mark Kinser, Steve’s cousin, finished third to close to within six points of leader Danny Lasoski, who finished fourth. Andy Hillenburg rounded out the Top 5.

Shaffer asserted himself early in the night’s action in Terre Haute, Ind. He was only seventh in qualifying, but he kicked it up a notch in the first heat race, which he won. Shaffer continued his strong showing in the Channellock Dash, finishing second, which gave him the second starting position in the feature race.

Dash winner Brad Furr started the main event from the pole, but Shaffer blew by him on the start. He was so dominant, Shaffer built up a lead of 15 car-lengths by Lap 6.

The only caution of the race came on Lap 26, when Craig Dollansky blew an engine and stopped in Turn 2. His unfortunate exit, however, set up one of the night’s highlights.

On the re-start, Hillenburg barreled through the field and jumped from 10th to fifth using a low line around the track. Donny Schatz did the same thing, but on a smaller scale. He moved from ninth to sixth.

Other winners at Terre Haute were Kraig Kinser in a heat race and Brad Furr in a heat race and the Channellock Dash.

The Outlaws return to Rossburg, Ohio, on Saturday and Sunday night for the Eldora Clash and Kings Royal.
