Kinser Wins Stretches Lead

Mark Kinser’s points lead in the World of Outlaws standings is only 50 points over Danny Lasoski, but that divide might as well be 500 after the ultra-tight battle the two drivers have waged over the past couple of months.

Kinser won his 14th Outlaws feature of the season on Tuesday night in the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa. The victory widened the gap over Lasoski, ending the back-and-forth points battle the two waged in the past two months.

Lasoski, who finished fourth behind Kinser, Jeff Shepard and Tim Shaffer, has three wins to Kinser’s 14.

For the first quarter of Tuesday’s race, it looked as though Kinser would have to settle for a top-five finish. Shaffer, Shepard and Jason Meyers were running 1, 2, 3 and establishing a quick pace through 10 laps. Their tight battle, however, made it possible for Kinser to take the lead when Shaffer bobbled, causing all three to slow ever so slightly.

Kinser pounced on the opportunity and went from fourth to first on the low side of the track. He then set a blistering pace as well, building his lead to the length of the straightaway before a caution tightened the field. Kinser eventually won the 40-lap race by 12 car-lengths.

“Those guys (Shaffer, Shepard, Meyers) were setting a pretty good pace, but unfortunately for Tim, he got held up there on the top, and it stacked them up behind him, and we were able go from 4th to first in that one corner,” said Kinser, who waited out a two-hour rain delay before taking the win. “This MOPAR car has plenty of horsepower; we proved that tonight. I’m just glad all these fans stuck around to see it.”

Karl Kinser, who ownes Mark’s No. 5 car, leads the owners points standings. He, too, thought his team had its work cut out for it to reach the front of the pack.

“We got a real good break there,” Kinser said of Shaffer’s slipup. “If it hadn’t been for that, it would have been pretty tough.”

Andy Hillenburg finished fifth, ahead of Greg Hodnett, Donny Schatz, Craig Dollansky, Dale Blaney and Joey Saldana.

Sammy Swindell survived a scary wreck with a push truck that failed to exit the speedway during his qualifying run. Swindell had just turned in the seventh best qualifying time when he plowed into the truck and destroyed his car.

He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of a fractured right ring finger, a cracked kneecap, contusions and broken bones in his left hand and contusions to his head and groin area, the latter requiring stitches. He was treated, held overnight for observation and released from Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler, Pa., on Wednesday morning.

The Outlaws return to action Thursday with a two-night event at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
