Duel Turns Into Free-For-All

Sammy Swindell reached the checkered flag 4.2 seconds ahead of his closest competitor Friday night in the World of Outlaws event at Red River Valley Speedway, but the veteran made it look easier than it actually was.

Swindell, who is running a part-time schedule this season, captured the victory in the Duel in the Dakotas’ second-night main event, but Craig Dollansky made him work for it.

Dollansky, who finished second, battled with Swindell and hometown favorite Donny Schatz for the lead in the final 10 laps. Dollansky led the first 20 laps of the 30-lap event, but Swindell pulled even with him on Lap 19 to let him know he was there. The two touched wheels, but Dollansky kept the lead.

A lap later, Swindell went low in Turn 2 to take the lead. Dollansky didn’t give up easily, however. He came back on the next lap and went low in Turn 3 to re-take the lead.

Dollansky was out front for two laps before Swindell and Schatz made it three abreast on the backstretch on Lap 23. Swindell worked to the front, with Schatz following him into second.

The next time around, Dollansky got back around Schatz for second, but he could not catch Swindell.

“There haven’t been very many races that I’ve won where I had to work that hard,” Swindell said. “Tonight it was just a matter of getting into the right place at the right time. I was a couple of times, and a couple of times I wasn’t.”

“We just didn’t get the breaks in traffic,” Dollansky said.

Schatz faded to fifth, and Meyers charged through the field in the closing laps to take third. Meyers made a bid for second, but Dollansky slammed the door on the final turn.

Still, Meyers was happy.

“This car was just awesome tonight,” he said. “It doesn’t get any better than this.”

“We gave it the best run we could,” Schatz said. “We just didn’t get through traffic as good as we could have.”

In the ongoing points battle between Danny Lasoski and Mark Kinser, Lasoski concluded the night atop the standings with 4,657 points. Kinser, who started last in the feature, has 4,638. The two entered Friday’s action tied at 4,623. Dollansky moved into third at 4,511, two points ahead of defending series champ Steve Kinser, who finished sixth Friday night.

The final of the Duel in the Dakotas is Saturday night.
