Cruisin Cousins Finish 1-2

Mark Kinser isn’t about to get caught up in the hype surrounding his battle with Danny Lasoski for the World of Outlaws points lead, which the two have fought for back and forth during the past few weeks.

In fact, Kinser isn’t worried about points at all. He still wants to win mind you, but not because the victories will keep him in the hunt for his third Outlaws championship.

“Danny and I have been swapping the points lead for the past week or so, but it’s the month of money, and points be damned. Give me the cash!” said Kinser, who missed out on a $20,000 payday at Red River Valley (N.D.) Speedway on Saturday night. “We had a rough time up there in Fargo. We tore up an entire car, and my hat’s off to my guys Dennis (Kohler), Justin (Adams), Cale (Kahne) and Willie (Kahne) for giving me a perfect race car tonight.”

Kinser’s car was so perfect, he needed just nine laps to get around leader Donny Schatz at Cedar Lake Speedway on Monday night and hold off his cousin Steve to collect his 10th Outlaws win of the season.

Steve tried to pass Mark for the lead three laps from the end and again on the last lap, but he didn’t have the power to complete the move. Steve finished seven car lengths behind his cousin after knifing through the field from his sixth starting spot.

Sammy Swindell, who is competing on a part-time basis this season, finished third, in front of Stevie Smith and Andy Hillenburg.

Points leader Danny Lasoski, who was the fast qualifier, finished sixth, but Mark Kinser sliced 16 points off his points lead to close to just 15 points. Lasoski took the points lead Friday night and extended it throughout the three-night Duel in the Dakotas in North Dakota.

Steve Kinser also made up some ground in the points. He moved into third in the standings past Craig Dollanksy, the winner in North Dakota, and now has a four-point cushion. Steve is 119 points behind Mark for second in the standings.

Other winners on Monday night in Somerset, Wis., included Schatz, Swindell and Mark Kinser in the heat races; Schatz in the Channellock Dash and Johnny Herrera in the B feature.

At just past the halfway point of the season, the points battle has come down to a four-way fight between the Kinser cousins, Lasoski and Dollansky. The four are separated by 158 points.

The month of July could go a long way toward sorting out the battle. There are 13 more nights of racing in July, including five nights of action in the next eight days.

Next up is a two-night event at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., on Thursday and Friday night.
