INDIANAPOLIS - Ryan Dalziel didn’t foresee this. Figuring the former DP cars in the TUDOR United SportsCar Series Prototype Class had too much horsepower to challenge, Dalziel didn’t see his Extreme Speed Motorsports team winning the pole for Friday’s Brickyard Grand Prix.

Or teammate Johannes van Overbeek qualifying second.

Yet, that’s what the team did Thursday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway - earning the first 1-2 start in the team’s history. Their effort also could make for quite an interesting start to Friday’s race.

Dalziel said the key to the race against the DP cars will be getting through the long straightaway at the start and holding the lead through the opening corner.

With teammates beside each other, will one block for the other?

“I already mentioned that,’’ Dalziel said with a smile. “After they told me we got the pole, I actually said all we need to do now is to double the cars. I think we need four of them to get down the straightaway.’’

Dalziel noted that Gustavo Yacaman starts third for OAK Racing faces the same challenge as the Extreme Speed Motorsports Honda-powered cars.

“It’s going to be tough,’’ Dalziel said. “The best thing for us is the fact that OAK is third. Who knows? I didn’t expect to come in here today and have the result that we did. This was a surprise today. Hopefully, we have a surprise (Friday).’’

Dalziel won the pole with a lap of 1 minute, 17.603 seconds. Overbeek’s top lap was 1:17.879. Yacaman starts third after a lap of 1:17.908. They were the only cars the eclipse the 1:18 barrier.

Dalziel’s path to the pole also faced a challenge in the second practice session when contact with a PC car caused rear body damage to Dalziel’s car. The damage was  limited to the body and the rear piece was replaced.

In the PC class, points leader Colin Braun won the pole with a lap of 1:19.849 and could be headed for his fifth win the last six class races for CORE autosport. After winning the pole, Braun said: “I think we have a really strong racecar for (Friday).’’

Giancarlo Fisichella claimed the pole in the GTLM Class with a lap of 1:22.378 in his Ferrari F458.

Dane Cameron scored the GTD pole in the Turner Motorsport BMW with a lap of 1:26.058.

Motor Racing Network will have live coverage of the Brickyard Grand Prix from Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday at 5:30 p.m. (ET), with live streaming at MRN.com. It's the ninth round of the inaugural TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.
