Chevrolet Rides Summer Surge Into Canada

As IMSA teams continue preparations for Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, one manufacturer is chugging into Bowmanville, Ontario, with a full head of steam.

Chevrolet is sitting atop the Manufacturers’ Standings in both classes in which it competes as Round 8 looms in the inaugural TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

Chevy’s mid-season surge includes back-to-back wins for the Corvette DP … with Wayne Taylor Racing in Detroit and Spirit of Daytona Racing most recently at Watkins Glen International.  The “Bow Tie Brigade” enjoys an 11-point lead over Ford among Prototype engine manufacturers.

And in the GT Le Mans class, Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen will be chasing their fourth straight win on Sunday when they tackle the 2.459-mile, 10-turn natural road course that sits some 90 minutes northeast of Toronto.  In the driver standings, Garcia and Magnussen lead their class … as do Jordan and Ricky Taylor in Prototypes.

"If we’re going to hold that lead over the next stretch of races, we must continue what we’ve been doing – minimize our mistakes and finish the season with all podium finishes," Ricky Taylor said, pointing to consistency more than conquest as the key to a second straight Prototype championship for WTR.  "I don’t care so much about wins."

The Taylors have steered their No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP to five top-five finishes in six starts this season, including the victory May 31 on the Belle Isle Street Circuit in Detroit.  The team is eager to improve on a fifth-place showing in its most recent outing at Watkins Glen.

"We lost some points in the last race and now, we’re in the mode of doing things one race at a time," said team owner Wayne Taylor.  "Nobody can make mistakes … from the drivers, to the engineers, to the guys doing pit stops.  If you do all of that right, then you should come out with a good result."

Spirit of Daytona Racing had it all right 12 days ago at The Glen, when co-drivers Michael Valiante and Richard Westbrook gave Chevrolet’s Corvette DP its second straight victory of the 2014 season.

"That was a huge thrill for everyone," said team owner Troy Flis.  "We came close at Detroit (second place behind Taylor & Taylor) and to win at The Glen was special.  Now, we have a good shot at going for the championship and we’re going to do everything we can to be there fighting for the title at the end of the season."

The Taylor brothers have a three-point lead over Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi.  The victory at Watkins Glen enabled Valiante and Westbrook to pull within 13 points of the lead with five races remaining.

In GT Le Mans, Garcia and Magnussen hold a nine-point advantage over the BMW Team RLL duo of Bill Auberlen and Andy Priaulx.  Chevrolet leads the Manufacturers’ Standings by a single point over Porsche.

The GT Daytona class also is competing this weekend, bringing the total number of cars entered to 40.  Townsend Bell and Bill Sweedler lead that class by seven points over Andy Lally and John Potter.

Prototype Challenge cars are idle and will resume competition later this month at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

TUDOR United SportsCar Championship teams will open practice at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park on Friday morning and qualify late Saturday afternoon.  Motor Racing Network will have live coverage of Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix Presented by Hawk Performance at 1:45 p.m. (ET), with live streaming at MRN.com.
