Taylors Closing In On First Win of 2014

For Wayne Taylor Racing, this weekend's Chevrolet Sports Car Classic on Detroit's Raceway at Belle Isle Park could not come at a better time.

With two straight second-place finishes this season in the inaugural TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, co-drivers Jordan and Ricky Taylor are ready to pour that momentum into a trip to the top of the post-race podium come Saturday afternoon.

A year ago, the No. 10 Chevrolet Corvette was the winning car on the 2.36-mile, 13-turn street circuit - in the capable hands of co-drivers Max Angelelli and Jordan Taylor.  This year, it's Taylor and his older brother Ricky steering the team into the fifth race of the season.

They enter the weekend tied for second place in the Prototype standings, sharing that spot with the Chip Ganassi Racing tandem of Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas.  They trail Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi by a scant three points.

"Everyone will have their eyes on us," Ricky Taylor said.  "We had an exceptional weekend there last year and were the car to beat the year before."

In last year’s race at Belle Isle Park, Jordan Taylor earned his first Daytona Prototype pole and then joined Angelelli in leading 45 of the race's 61 laps.  The team posted the second of its five wins that would lead to the 2013 Prototype championship in the final year of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series.

"It’ll be a very short race," Ricky Taylor said of Saturday’s event.  "We might have an advantage.  We’re used to racing this combination of classes.  It’ll be like the old GRAND-AM days."

There are just two of IMSA’s four classes running in Detroit, Prototype and GT Daytona.  And the race time will be 1 hour, 40 minutes – about an hour shorter than a typical event.

"Track position is very important on a street course like Detroit," said Jordan Taylor, whose team has qualified no worse than sixth for any of its four starts so far this year.  "It’s all going to come down to who can capitalize on the traffic and the opportunistic moves that will have to be made.

"When we start lapping the GTD cars, that’s when the race will get interesting.  We’ll just have to be more cautious.  We’ll use some of the improvements we’ve found in our car to our advantage in Detroit.  I think we’re in good shape."

Both drivers are in agreement that the key to their team’s early-season success is not only what’s been accomplished on the track but in the pits.

"Our team has been notoriously good," said Jordan Taylor.  "As long as we can keep that trend going, and both Ricky and I can keep it somewhere near the front, I think we’ll have another shot at the win."

And while Taylor and his mates are seeking their first victory of the season in Detroit this weekend, it’ll be the last race for his mullet hair style.  Jordan has decided to cut it off during next month’s race weekend at Watkins Glen International and is selling raffle tickets for charitable purposes.

The winning ticket drawn will include the opportunity to assist with the haircut, along with full access to the IMSA Paddock during race weekend at The Glen.  Proceeds will benefit Camp Boggy Creek in Florida – which enriches the lives of children with serious illnesses and their families, and Camp Anokijig in Wisconsin – a facility that provides youth and families with an outdoor setting dedicated to the development of positive lifestyles based on Christian principles and values.

"I’ve been growing it since January 2013 and I’m getting tired of it," Taylor said of his menacing mop.  "I hope to raise $10,000 by raffling off this once-in-a-lifetime experience for one lucky fan.  Raising money for two great charities is what this is all about."

TUDOR United SportsCar Championship teams will open practice Friday morning and qualify later in the day at 5:25 p.m. (ET).  Motor Racing Network will have live coverage of Saturday’s Chevrolet Sports Car Classic Presented by Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers at 12 p.m., with live streaming at MRN.com.
