Top Fuel To Require Shutoff Device
December 8, 2008 | 8:09 P.M. EST
With this announcement, NHRA continues in its ongoing efforts to improve safety in drag racing. Nitro Funny Cars have been required to use the device beginning at the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals in October.
The Electrimotion Safety Shutoff Controller was designed by Dave Leahy of Electrimotion, a company based in Delaware, Ohio, that specializes in electronic control systems. The controller senses manifold burst panel failure and simultaneously activates the fuel shutoff, shuts off ignition, and deploys parachutes.
Use of the shutoff device will be mandatory for both Top Fuel and Funny Cars at the season-opening Kragen O'Reilly Winternationals at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, Feb. 5-9, 2009.
