Kyle Busch overcame a pit road speeding penalty to score his ninth career NASCAR XFINITY Series win at Bristol Motor Speedway Friday night in the Food City 300.

It was Busch’s fifth win in nine starts this season. He has nine career Bristol wins.

“Great car,” Busch said after climbing from his winning Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. “All the guys at Joe Gibbs Racing did a phenomenal job. This is cool to race with these guys. I love to race with this team.

Busch won both the first two stages and led five times for 186 laps including the final 81.

“It’s nice to come out here and race in this series,” Busch said. “It was awesome off the truck yesterday. The Joe Gibbs Racing engine was really strong. I want to thank ‘Rowdy Nation’ as well – we’ve had a great week so far, hopefully it works out for us tomorrow.”

Busch now goes for the Bristol sweep in Saturday night’s main event.

“I think we can, yeah,” he said. “We’ve got a fast car. We just have to make the right adjustments overnight here and get it ready for tomorrow. We had a really fast car first round in qualifying and then we lost four tenths of a second. I don’t know what happened or where that went. Adam (Stevens) and I are trying to figure that out.

“You know our heads are in the books and in the computer trying to find it and we just don’t see it so hopefully our race setup is pretty good. We felt like our race setup was pretty good. We struggled in qualifying all day today and so if that’s any indication to how our car is then we’ll still have speed in it.”

Daniel Suarez, Elliott Sadler, Ty Dillon and Justin Allgaier rounded out the top five.

Brennan Poole, Daniel Hemric, Austin Dillon, Joey Logano and Close Custer completed the first ten finishers.

Busch won Wednesday’s Camping World Truck Series race at Bristol also coming back from a late race pit road speeding penalty. He now shoots to sweep the weekend by winning a third race Saturday night in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race.

Sadler leads the series standings by 110 points over William Byron.

The NASCAR XFINITY Series returns to action next Sunday with the Johnsonville 180 at Road America.
