Matt Kenseth won the pole for Saturday night's Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond Raceway.

Kenseth’s lap of 122.421 mph gave him the No. 1 starting spot in the regular season finale. It gave Kenseth a sweep of Richmond poles as he also took the April race’s top spot. He scored the 20th career pole of his career.

“I didn’t think I was going to have enough speed, I didn’t think that was a fast enough lap time to get the pole,” Kenseth said.

“We’ve been running pretty good the last few months. We haven’t been able to break through and get a win like we’d like to have, we got crashed out at Michigan. But other than that we’ve been up there in the mix. We just haven’t been able to get it to line up and get the victory.”

Kenseth is currently among the 16 drivers that make up the playoff grid but he is winless. A trip to Victory Lane Saturday night would guarantee him a berth in the playoffs.

“We were tight the second round, I didn’t think I had enough speed to get the pole, but these guys did a great job,” Kenseth said. “This is a great start for the weekend, hoping for the best tomorrow.”

It will be an all Joe Gibbs Racing front row as last week’s Darlington winner Denny Hamlin will start second.

Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson and Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top five.

Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Chase Elliott and Erik Jones completed the first 10 qualifiers.

Other notable winless drivers looking to score a win and get into the playoffs Saturday night include Jamie McMurray 11th, Joey Logano 12th, Clint Bowyer 13th, Daniel Suarez 16th and Dale Earnhardt Jr. 21st.
