Kurt Busch recovered from an early brush with the wall to record a top-five finish Saturday night at Bristol in his 600th career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start.

It’s the second top-10 finish for the Daytona 500 champion in his last three starts, signaling a possible recovery from a dismal season that’s seen Busch only record three top-five finishes. Busch was also the highest finishing Ford driver on the night.

And he had to overcome a brush with the wall and later used pit strategy to get there.

“We’ve been struggling with the VHT on the bottom so I just knew we needed to wait and wait and wait and I was hopeful at lap 250 it would come to us,” Busch said. “I pushed it too hard then and got some right-front tire damage on the fender. We had to work through that."

“At the end we got in position because Tony Gibson made a good call and put us on fresher tires than the competition and it was the old fun Bristol for me,” Busch said. “I’m really proud of this Monster Energy Ford - to be first in class, to get a top-five in my 600th start and to see the lead with 50 to go.”

Busch said it was a hard-felt finish at a track where he has gone to Victory Lane five times.

“It was great. I felt like we were in good position because of Tony’s good pit call to give me fresh tires and go hard with 80 laps to go,” Busch said. “It was fun knifing through the leaders. We got to fourth and it was like I ran out of mojo but I’m really happy with my 600th start to sniff the lead with 50 to go and get beat by the same team cars.”

Busch says his performance the last few races has improved and he’s happy with where he is this season and in his career.

“It means I did okay. I’m not an old bull. I’m ready to fight these young guys and put up a good battle,” Busch said. “If we run like this in the playoffs we’ll be good.”

Busch currently sits 13th in series standings, but ninth in Playoff seedings with two races remaining in the regular season.
