Matt Kenseth isn’t thinking about 2018, and remains focused on winning a race and making the playoffs this season.

The veteran driver will not return to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2018 and as of now, does not have a plan in place to compete in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. But his unknown future hasn’t impacted his approach to the remainder of this campaign in trying to score his first win of the season and secure a berth in the playoffs.

"I'm concerned about 2017," Kenseth said Friday morning at Bristol Motor Speedway. "We've got 13 races left, three to try and get into the playoffs. We're not in there yet. I kind of got run over at the end of the race last week by the '24' (Chase Elliott) trying to race him and the '1' (Jamie McMurray), at least for points to try to get a cushion if we don't get a win.

"Hopefully we get a win, get into the playoffs and race for a championship. That's our goal every year and that's what I'm concentrating on."

The 2003 Cup Series champ has won at Bristol four times before. He ran fourth at Bristol in April and hopes to build on that.

"We’ve had good cars since I’ve been at JGR," Kenseth said. "We’ve had some DNFs, bad things happen, but we’ve led some laps and been in position most races. If we can get our car to run like it typically does here, we’re a contender."

Despite doing his best to stay in the moment and not think about next year, Kenseth’s name continues to swirl in the "Silly Season" discussion. However, as seats get filled and teams struggle to find sponsorship dollars to compete, opportunities for Kenseth to land a competitive ride keep dwindling.

None of it seems to worry the veteran driver.

"I'll let you know when I know something," said Kenseth. "I'm not worried about. Not concerned about it. I just don't have anything for next year to talk about at the moment."
