Erik Jones came home second in Saturday night’s Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway to score the best finish of his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series career.

Jones led 260 laps and had his Furniture Row Racing Toyota in contention for Victory Lane throughout the 500-lap grind on the Tennessee short track. But he could not hold off race winner Kyle Busch who took the lead with 56 laps to go and never looked back.

It left Jones to settle for a still impressive second place finish.

And he was still disappointed.

“Yeah, I mean, you know, you don't want to sound like you're whining or being a sore loser by saying it sucks to run second, but it's a bummer,” he said.   “It hurts.  You know, you want to win every race you're in.  This was the first shot that I really had to come really close to it in the Cup Series.  Bristol is a really good racetrack for myself.  Thought we had a shot at it all night, led a ton of laps.

“That good of a car, it's Kyle Busch.  He won all three races here this weekend.  So I feel like I'm close to him here, just trying to find that last little bit.”

A win would have gotten Jones into the playoffs and with three spots still up for grabs he remains in the hunt now with only two races left in the regular season.

While he was still somewhat bitter after coming so close Saturday night at Bristol, Jones remains optimistic about what lies ahead.

“When you have a car that fast, having like that consistent, that good, you know, yeah, it pumps everybody up,” he said. “It pumps me up, pumps the team up.  It's good for everybody.

“We just really did a good job as a team.  We executed the best we could.  We had great pit stops.  I don't think we lost a spot, which is a great day for us on pit road.  Good step up in that department and just a good day overall for the team.”
