Martin Truex Jr. won the pole for Sunday's Overton's 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway after Kyle Larson had his pole winning time disallowed.

Truex Jr. will now start out front in a week that he inherited the top spot in the standings after Larson was penalized 35 points for an infraction found after his second-place Kentucky finish a week ago. The penalty dropped him 34 behind Truex Jr. coming into this weekend’s race.
“Not the way we wanted to get our first pole of the year, but looking forward to starting up front and getting a good pit stall,” Truex said.

Larson had thought he had won his fourth pole of the year and fifth overall until his car failed post qualifying inspection for an unapproved rear deck fin lid.

“Missing Chad (Johnston, crew chief) I wish I could have him on the box on Sunday, but we will be strong these next few weeks,” Larson said after his apparent pole-winning run of his suspended crew chief, who will miss three races because of the Kentucky penalty.  “We have a great lineup of guys and gals at Chip Ganassi Racing."

Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Jamie McMurray and Kasey Kahne rounded out the top five.

Erik Jones, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski completed the first 10 qualifiers.

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams will have a pair of practice sessions on Saturday to dial in their cars for the Overton’s 301.
