The first trip to Dover International Speedway for the Monster Energy Cup Series this season resulted in a pair of career bests for rookie Daniel Suárez.

After qualifying a best third, Suárez backed that up with a career-best sixth-place finish in just his 13th Cup Series start in Sunday's AAA 400 Drive for Autism.

“In the beginning, we were OK and then later on we were pretty bad," Suárez said about his day. “We were able to make some adjustments and get back to a top 10. I feel like we had a top-10 car and we ended up right there."

Suárez was able to avoid the multi-car crash, which ended the race under caution.

“It was a little crazy," Suárez said. "I was surprised how good of a grip I had getting to corner one and then exit of two I saw the 13 (Ty Dillon) sideways and really a big mess up there and I’m lucky I was clear by myself to move around and avoid the wreck, but it was a close one for sure.”

Coming into the weekend, Suárez held a 10-point advantage in the Rookie of the Year standings over Erik Jones. Sunday's finish was Suárez's fourth top 10 of the year and third consecutive finish of 11th or better.

"I think the entire team is making process," Suárez said. "I’m very proud of that and we just have to keep working and keep moving in the same direction."

Suárez remains 19th in the standings a the Cup Series now heads to Pocono Raceway.
