Joey Logano scored his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series pole of the season Friday at Phoenix Raceway.

Logano turned a lap of 137.321 mph to take the top spot for Sunday’s Camping World 500.

“It’s nice, it’s a good momentum builder for us,” said Logano, who won last November’s race at Phoenix.  “This has always been a good track for us. We were finally able to break through and win here last fall.

“I feel like we had a real good car in race trim today. Our car was fast. We just have to stick to our guns and do what we know how to do, tune our car in a little better for tomorrow’s practices and execute in the race.”

It was the Team Penske driver’s 18th career pole.

Ryan Blaney qualified second and will start his Wood Brothers Ford outside the front row for his best career series start.

“It is nice to have fast race cars,” Blaney said. “You have seen it the past two weeks. Our Wood Brothers car and the Penske group have been fast in qualifying trim. That is something to be proud of as the two organizations work well together. We just needed a little more to get there but we were close.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray rounded out the top five.

Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott, Erik Jones, Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne completed the first ten qualifiers.

“I wasn’t too sure after practice, but the 5-hour Energy Camry ended up being really close to what I needed in the last round,” Jones commented. “Looking back on it, knowing what the pole was, I think there was a few things that we probably could’ve done to be a little better, that would’ve gave us a good shot at it. Good qualifying effort nonetheless. Good to make it to the third round again here and in a getting starting spot.”

Other notables in the field include Jimmie Johnson (14th), last week’s Las Vegas winner Martin Truex Jr. (16th), Kevin Harvick (23rd), Danica Patrick (27th) and Daniel Suarez (27th).

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers will have a pair of practice sessions on Saturday to dial in their cars for Sunday’s fourth race of the 2017 season.
