The Furniture Row Racing driver has come close several times to winning this year, only to be disappointed in the end.
He was on the short end of a photo finish to Denny Hamlin in the Daytona 500. Truex Jr. had dominating cars in both Texas and Kansas only to have misfortune arise and end any hopes of finding Victory Lane.
But Sunday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway he was able to overcome any of those kinds of challenges and turned in the most dominating performance in NASCAR history leading 392 of 400 laps on his way to career win No. 4.
“Yeah, it’s just amazing,” he said in Victory Lane. “I’m so proud. It really stung last year when we lost this one to fuel mileage after running that good, but I’m telling you we’re going to win a lot of races.
“This team is so good and we’re just starting to come into our own, so I’m just proud to drive for them, proud to get Barney Visser (team owner) in victory lane again and everybody from Furniture Row and Denver Mattress and Bass Pro Shops. Johnny (Morris, Bass Pro Shops) is here tonight, so we’ve been real close with him a few times this year – Daytona 500 lost by a foot or so and led the most laps at Texas with Bass Pro on the car and come up short, so glad we could get him one for sure and really proud to have him on our race car.”
But there was more to the win than a trophy and winner’s check.
Truex Jr's girlfriend Sherry Pollex was diagnosed with ovarian cancer nearly two years ago and has fought the disease admirably all the while supporting Truex Jr.’s career.
She was declared cancer-free a few months ago and the couple have had much to celebrate since.
“Yeah, I mean it’s amazing,” Pollex said. “I keep telling him that he had to lose all those races and that God was building his character to win a big one and this was huge for us and our hometown and our family and for Johnny and Barney and we’ve been through so much. This is just the icing on the cake. It’s awesome. It’s so cool.”
The level of emotion caught up to Truex Jr. after he took the checkered flag on Sunday.
“It feels awesome,” he said. “Coca-Cola 600, man, this is one everybody wants to win. I feel like we had this thing won last year when we gave it up and just I don’t know. There are so many emotions, I had to unplug my radio and just ride around and think for a few minutes, because I didn’t even know what I was going to say or what I was going to do.”
