The 18-year-old grandson of car owner Felix Sabates was killed in an accidental shooting Saturday in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., according to a report by the Sun Sentinel.

An official with Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates confirmed that Feliciano Sabates was the grandson of Felix Sabates.

The newspaper, citing the police report, stated that a 17-year-old shot Sabates as a group of friends were playing with a 9mm pistol, inserting and removing the gun’s magazine at a gathering. The Sun Sentinel, citing an arrest report, stated that the shooter was drunk and on drugs at the time.

The shooter faces a manslaughter charge.

“The information and physical evidence was consistent that this was a careless act rather than an intentional act, thus the manslaughter by culpable negligence charge," police spokesman Commander William Brandt said in the Sun-Sentinel report.
