BRISTOL, Tenn. - Sherry Pollex, girlfriend of Martin Truex Jr., returned home Friday from the hospital, a week after having surgery for ovarian cancer.
“It’s a big step in the right direction,’’ Truex told Motor Racing Network before returning home Friday. “Everything has gone really well up to this point, as well as we could have hoped. Her spirits are high. She’s amazing, and she’s going to get through this. Glad she’s home. She’s been happy the last couple of days. She’s ready to move forward.’’
Truex skipped last Friday’s practice and qualifying at Michigan to be with Pollex for her surgery.
She has provided updates on Twitter at @SherryPollex. She stated on Twitter that she expected to have six months of chemotherapy and another year of what she described as “Maintenance chemo.’’
Truex said “the hardest part is over, I think for her. The surgery was pretty extensive. Her doctor is incredible; feels real good with where she is at. He said she is the perfect patient because she is so young and healthy and strong. She’s just got an amazing attitude. She’s the kind of person when something like this happens, she’s worried about everybody else around her.’’
“She checks up on on me all the time and makes sure I’m OK,’’ he said. “I tell her, “I’m OK and I’m here for you.’ ‘’
So, how is Truex is doing?
“At first it’s a shock,’’ he said. “You want to know why us? Why her? She’s the last person on the earth that deserves something like that, but this is how life goes sometimes. Sometimes life deals you cards that you don’t like, and you’ve got to do the best you can to get through it. I feel we’ve got the family and friends and support system to get through anything.’’
