NASCAR's change to the Chase format has put more emphasis on winning and it has made an impact in the opening half of the regular season.

The bulk of the first 13 races have featured intense competition and exciting racing. Although there have been several other circumstances that have added to the product being so good - tire management, worn track surfaces, the timing of caution flags and even impending weather challenges - getting to Victory Lane and punching a ticket to the Chase have been major elements in the equation.

There have been some recent lulls in the intensity at both Charlotte and Dover (you'll have that when Jimmie Johnson turns in dominating performances) but overall the racing has been compelling since the season began back in February at Daytona.

Kevin Harvick’s dominance. Who could have predicted at the beginning of the season that Harvick and crew chief Rodney Childers would form one of the season's most dominant pairings immediately?

Harvick could have four or five wins instead of two at this point had it not been for mechanical issues, pit road problems or weird misfortune. He’s been fast just about every week. Already, Harvick has led 796 laps - more than he led combined the past two seasons.

So far, Harvick has shown no signs of slowing. If he and his team can avoid mistakes, it will be hard to beat them as the season progresses.
