Blame it on being Friday the 13th or blame it on it the fact that Dale Earnhardt Jr. couldn’t wait to get back to a track after winning last weekend at Pocono Raceway.
Either way, Earnhardt flew Friday morning to Michigan without something.
He left Ryan Newman behind.
Newman’s wife, Krissie, later stated on Twitter that Newman was getting a ride on Dale Jarrett’s plane.
Earnhardt said he got a text from Newman after he arrived in Michigan. Earnhardt said Newman stated he should have texted Earnhardt.
So how did this happen?
“On Tuesday, (Newman) asked me if he could take a ride to the racetrack, which is common for drivers to do,’’ Earnhardt said. “We were leaving at 8:30 (a.m.). That’s what it said on my calendar. Since Tuesday, we’ve added some media ... so my PR guy Mike Hoag moved take-off time to 8 o’clock.
“I didn’t know about it. I didn’t look at my calendar. When I got up this morning, I didn’t look at the clock. I just got in the shower and went downstairs and got in the car, drove to the airport and got in the plane, and I forgot about Ryan.
“Even if we were taking off at 8:30 and he wasn’t there, I probably would have left him. He should have texted me last night. I think he got a ride. That was unfortunate, for sure. It happens.’’
Newman said he sought a ride with Earnhardt because Newman's wife and children were going to fly up on Saturday in his plane and it made sense to hitch a ride instead of shuttling the plane back and forth.
Newman said when he arrived at the airport Friday morning he saw Earnhardt's truck but the plane was gone. Newman than drove across the airport and saw Jarrett's plane and “bummed a ride.
“It's probably the closest I've been to not making practice,’’ Newman said.
Newman, who arrived in time for practice, called the episode “just an honest mistake.’’
