As part of its commitment to safety during the construction of the $400 million DAYTONA Rising project, Daytona International Speedway participated in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) National Fall Safety Stand-Down – an initiative that emphasizes fall prevention in the construction industry. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Greg Biffle joined key officials from OSHA, Daytona International Speedway and Barton Malow (design-builder for DAYTONA Rising) at the “World Center of Racing” earlier today to discuss important safety topics with the DAYTONA Rising construction team.

OSHA Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor Jordan Barab kicked off the event by discussing the importance of effective safety and health programs at construction sites such as DAYTONA Rising.

“The number of businesses and workers partnering with OSHA in this week is unprecedented and we want the impact to be unmatched as well,” said Barab. “We're bringing everyone together, including everyone here at the Speedway today, for these events so that we save more lives and prevent more injuries than ever before.”

Earlier this year, OSHA’s Jacksonville Area Office, the University of South Florida SafetyFlorida Consultation Program and Barton Malow signed a strategic partnership for DAYTONA Rising that focuses on preventing work-related injuries and controlling or eliminating serious workplace hazards.

“Safety is the foundation of our business both on and off the track,” said Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III. “It’s important to reinforce the importance of safety as we continue to move forward with DAYTONA Rising.”

“We’re committed to providing our employees with a safe working environment and will continue to take every measure to ensure that our staff is properly trained and prepared,” said Barton Malow Vice President Len Moser. “Our team is proud to be associated with these great organizations to collectively promote safety management.”

After hearing remarks from Chitwood and Moser, the construction team received a special safety demonstration from Greg Biffle, driver of the No. 16 3M Ford Fusion for Roush Fenway Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Biffle was on hand to showcase 3M harness technology as well as preview the upcoming Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola on Saturday, July 5. He also helped DIS crews install some of the first new, wider seats as part of DAYTONA Rising (more on that below).

“I’m happy to help Daytona International Speedway and Barton Malow with their ongoing safety efforts for the DAYTONA Rising project,” said Biffle. “It’s amazing to see how the project has developed in a short time. I hope to be standing in Victory Lane when we return here for the Coke Zero 400.”

DAYTONA Rising Construction Activities
Approximately 2,000 seats were installed in the new grandstand footprint near Turn One. These seats will be available in time for Budweiser Speedweeks 2015. The Speedway expects to install a total of 40,000 new seats by 2015.

The Speedway also continued escalator, elevator shaft and steel installation during the last month of construction and is now focused on race-ready preparation for the Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola. Below is a list of key upcoming race-ready activities:
• Asphalt paving and patching
• Installation of existing stairway fencing and fencing
• Set up Sprint Tower elevator tent lobbies
• Installation of entrance chutes for ticket gates
