FORT WORTH, Tex. - Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne, who openly professes his faith, is among the celebrity endorsers for the movie “God’s Not Dead.’’

The movie, which opened last month, is about a college philosophy professor  who tells his class their assignment is to write about God being dead. One student said he can’t do that because of his belief, so his assignment becomes proving God isn’t dead.

Bayne, who won the 2011 Daytona 500, is among sports figures endorsing the movie on the film’s website. Others endorsing the movie include U.S. Olympic gold medalist diver David Boudia, former New York Yankee pitcher Andy Pettitte and New York Giants kicker Josh Brown.

“I think it’s really cool if you go to a movie theatre right now, there’s like two or three movies about God,’’ Bayne said Thursday at Texas Motor Speedway.

Bayne said he watched “God’s Not Dead” earlier this year and was asked about it. Bayne states in his endorsement: “ ‘God’s Not Dead’ inspires believers to not only love the Lord with our hearts and souls, but also with our minds, so that we will always be prepared to give the reason for the hope we have, as it says in 1 Peter 3:15.’’

Bayne, whose autobiography is called “Driven by Faith,” said he likes that the movie “shows the apologetic side of Christianity. It just really talks about how as a believer we can use use our minds. It’s not like all blind faith. There’s a lot of things that point to there being a Creator, and I thought that was a cool point of view because a lot of movies don’t show that. I’m excited there are people taking interest in faith and movies.’’

The movie stars Kevin Sorbo as the college professor. Sorbo is best known for his role as Hercules in “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.” Dean Cain, who played the Clark Kent/Superman in the TV show “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman’’ also is in the film.

“Noah” ranked No. 1 at the box office last weekend with “God’s Not Dead’’ maintaining its No. 5 spot for a second consecutive week.
