FORT WORTH, Texas - With the NCAA Final Four a short drive from Texas Motor Speedway this weekend, Dale Earnhardt Jr. thought it was a good time to look back on his basketball glory.
He shared on Twitter Thursday a team photo of when he played on the Oak Ridge Military JV basketball team. Played might not be the right word, though.
Earnhardt said he only scored two points, but it was still worth it being on the team.
“I sat on the bench a lot,’’ Earnhardt said before NASCAR Sprint Cup practice Friday. “I was the smallest guy. I didn’t have any skill. I only played because you got to leave campus for the road games. Being able to leave, even for a day, in military school, was an amazing vacation. After the game, you would go get pizza. We just didn’t have those kind of luxuries being on campus. That was pretty neat.’’
So, how did he score his two points?
“I threw it up with my eyes closed,’’ Earnhardt said of the shot. “The only way I knew it went in was because (sister) Kelley and everybody that was there, maybe 10 or 12 people that were there, were screaming when it went in. I knew it went in but I never saw it. Some guy was jumping at me, so I closed my eyes and threw it up.”
Earnhardt said his sister found the picture, and he decided to share it on Twitter. That wasn’t the end of Earnhardt’s basketball days, though. He still plays with friends.
“I’m not skillful at all, but it’s fun,’’ he said. “It’s a good way to get some energy, some exercise.’’
Earnhardt said he planned attend Saturday’s games at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, but his plans have changed and he won’t be able to attend. He said he had Florida in his bracket winning the championship, so he says he’ll root for him but admits that’s not his college basketball team. His team is the North Carolina Tar Heels.
