Four Wreck Primary Cars

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Kyle Busch and Danica Patrick were among four drivers who each had to go to a backup car after Friday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup practice at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Busch, Patrick, Greg Biffle and Justin Allgaier each went to backup cars. Parker Kligerman’s team worked to repair his car after it was hit by Patrick’s car about three minutes into the practice session.

Because the incidents happened before qualifying, those using a backup car do not have to start at the rear of the starting field.

Patrick was involved in the first incident. She slid on exit of the corner, bounced into Kligerman, running on her inside, and hit the wall. Busch and Biffle also had similar incidents with Biffle sliding off Turn 4, hitting the outside wall and then hitting the inside wall.

Allgaier bounced off the Turn 1 wall as he moved up to let Jeff Gordon run below him. It was Allgaier’s first lap. He slid into the wall. His team was unable to get the backup ready for him to run in practice.

“I went straight up in the fence,’’ Allgaier said. “I thought the right front tire had blown, just the way it felt. Obviously, the right front was still up.’’

So, what is going on?

“It’s a big transition for us this weekend, not only with the new rules package but with the new tires,’’ said Ryan Newman, who was seventh fastest in practice. “It seems like the cars are really sensitive to changes.’’

Kurt Busch was the fastest in practice with a lap of 129.789 mph. The track record is 129.535 mph set by Kyle Busch last March.

Jeff Gordon was second quick in practice at 129.421 mph and was followed by Denny Hamlin (129.351 mph), Carl Edwards (129.317) and Marcos Ambrose (129.238).
