The 2014 NASCAR season rolls on with Week No. 2 and a trip to Phoenix International Raceway.
PIR, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary season, is set to host both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series as the follow-up weekend to Daytona.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., a two-time Sprint Cup winner at Phoenix, rides high into "The Valley of the Sun" after his second career Daytona 500 victory last Sunday night. He’ll have his hands full trying to start the campaign with back-to-back wins with the likes of last year’s "The Profit" on CNBC 500 winner Carl Edwards, November race winner Kevin Harvick and last week’s Daytona runner-up Denny Hamlin - a perennial Phoenix contender - in the field.
The weekend will be historic as the Sprint Cup Series uses NASCAR’s new "knockout" qualifying format to set the field for Sunday’s race. Two sessions will make up the qualifying round on Friday with the fastest driver in the second group winning the pole for Sunday’s race. The Nationwide Series will also use the format during its qualifying session on Saturday.
The Phoenix schedule actually begins Thursday night with the K&N Pro Series West Talking Stick Resort 75. Then on Friday, Sprint Cup qualifying is slated for 6:40 p.m. (ET). Motor Racing Network - "The Voice of NASCAR" - will carry the session live from PIR. The NASCAR Mexico Series Toyota 120 rounds out the night.
Saturday’s agenda will find Nationwide Series qualifying at 12:10 p.m. MRN’s live coverage of the Blue Jeans Go Green 200 Presented by Cotton follows at 3:15 p.m. Finally, Motor Racing Network hits the airwaves on Sunday for live coverage of "The Profit" on CNBC 500 at 2 p.m. ET.
You can listen to all the broadcasts live from Phoenix on your local MRN radio affiliate or its website. All broadcasts will also stream live at MRN.com ... which will be trackside in Phoenix with comprehensive coverage including breaking news, recaps, features, results, statistics, photos, audio, video and post-race analysis.
Stay with MRN.com all weekend for the latest from Phoenix International Raceway.
