The incident started when Brian Scott, running in the middle, moved up, after apparent contact with Kevin Harvick’s car. Scott and Aric Almirola then made contact. That sent Almirola cutting across the track, clipping Austin Dillon and Patrick. The contact with Patrick sent her car across the track and she hit the wall hard with the right front.
No drivers were injured.
“More than anything, I’m just upset because the car felt really good, it was the best car I’ve had all of Speedweeks,’’ she said. “It seemed like we could catch whoever and move around ... and move forward. I just felt like everything was going pretty well. It’s just upsetting. It’s a bummer. That’s kind of the excitement of speedway racing that anything can happen. We’ll go get them at Phoenix.’’
Waltrip said he wasn’t sure what happened.
“I don’t know what started it, but I know what ended it,’’ Waltrip said. “I was goibng to be fine. somebody cleaned our clock from behind. I guess they didn’t get the word there was a wreck.’’
Almirola said he wasn’t sure what happened other than “somebody got loose up under us and ruined our day.’’
Those involved in the incident, according to NASCAR, were Parker Kligerman, Paul Menard, David Gilliland, Kasey Kahne, Marcos Ambrose, Justin Allgaier, Josh Wise, Dillon, Scott, Almirola, Waltrip Patrick and Harvick.
