Justin Allgaier becomes the eighth Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate this season with Phoenix Racing announcing that he’ll drive the No. 51 car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
"This is an opportunity of a lifetime, and I intend to make the most of it," Allgaier said in a statement from the team. "I am very grateful to (owner) Harry Scott and Brandt for having faith in me to compete against the best drivers in the world."
Allgaier joins a rookie class that includes Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon, Alex Bowman, Ryan Truex, Cole Whitt, Parker Kligerman and Michael Annett.
Allgaier finished fifth in the Nationwide Series points last year with 16 top-10 finishes. He ran four Cup races for Phoenix Racing late last season. His best finish was 24th at Talladega Superspeedway in October.
BRANDT follows Allgaier from the Nationwide Series and will sponsor Allgaier in 21 Cup race this season.
"The entire BRANDT team is excited about moving to the next level," said Rick Brandt, company president and CEO, in a statement. "We looked long and hard at this opportunity, and ultimately, we decided that we needed the broader footprint that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series affords us to drive our business forward. This is about taking our brand to the millions of fans who watch the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series."
Joining BRANDT on the car are The National FFA, TradeMark Nitrogen, Nutrients for Life Foundation, Precision Tank and Grigg Brothers.
Phoenix Racing will field two cars for the Daytona 500 with Bobby Labonte driving the No. 52 car. The team announced that Labonte will drive that second car in “several races’’ this season but did not specify his schedule.
