BK Racing announced Monday that Alex Bowman and Ryan Truex will drive for the team this season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
The move is not a surprise. Both drivers took part in preseason testing with BK Racing earlier this month at Daytona International Speedway. Truex will drive the No. 83 Toyota, and Bowman will drive the No. 23 Toyota. The team has changed that car’s number from No. 93. Dale Ferguson will be Truex’s crew chief, while Dave Winston will be Bowman’s crew chief.
Both will compete for Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors. That field already includes Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon, Parker Kligerman, Cole Whitt and Michael Annett.
"This is an extremely good opportunity for me," Bowman said in a statement from the team. "Ron (Devine) and I first started talking about the possibilities months ago. I'm happy to be a part of this organization."
Bowman finished 11th in the points last year in the Nationwide Series. His best result was third in the season-opening race at Daytona. He finished with six top-10 results and two poles.
Truex ran in three Cup races last year and no Nationwide races. His best finish in Cup was 32nd at Dover in September for Phoenix Racing.
"Driving in the Sprint Cup Series has been a goal since I started racing, and to start this next chapter with BK Racing makes it extra special,’’ Truex said in a statement from the team. “I am very excited for this opportunity."
The team also announced that Borla Exhaust will serve as a primary sponsor for the Daytona 500 as part of a multi-race sponsorship agreement for this season.
